Van Bert Farms has been a complete equestrian horse training facility since 1965. We are a family operated business, with several family members as horse trainers. Van Bert Farms prides itself in being the trainer of several World and International Champions and Grand Champions.<>

Horses at Van Bert Farms are started as weanlings. Hands-on-work is done from the beginning of life. Imprinting and exposure to different elements is done for several months. Van Bert Farms is the winner of the 2003 & 2004 obstacle trail weanling and yearling World<>Championship.!

If a Mountain Horse has been imprinted or handled since birth, starting them under saddle is generally very simple. A saddle is slowly introduced to the horse. Horses at Van Bert Farms are never started with a bit. A halter-bridle is used until the horse is comfortable with turning left and right and has learned to start and stop. Once the horse has shown consistency in gait, then he is shod with a keg shoe only. No artificial training aids are used at anytime during the horses training. If you have view the video of "Feel the Heat" you will note that since this horse has only been started for two weeks he is still in a halter-bridle and is still unshod, but his gait is very consistent, smooth and even. Further training in headset, and for the purpose of showing, a bit is introduced only after a reputable Equine Dentist has made sure there are no problems with the teeth and mouth and wolf teeth are pulled. As with people , horses have special talents too. After several months of training an evaluation will reveal that some horses are more suitable for the show ring and some will be more suitable for the trail. The Mountain Horses have the aptitude to be great at both but generally excel at one or the other. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THE BLUE IN THE SHOW RING OR A SAFE MOUNT ON THE TRAILS, VAN BERT FARMS HAS THE TREASURES TO SUPPLY YOU WITH BOTH!
